What a great place Whitby is!

It’s an unspoilt, picturesque, working sea side town with all its old buildings, a ruin on the hill, a working quay, a very friendly Yacht Club …….. oh and a couple of thousand Goths!!

We stumbled on Whitby two years ago  when we were camping and they put on their Folk Fortnight for us ….. this time they gave us Whitby Goths Weekend. At first we thought that all the strangely attired people were locals and the Dracula thing attracted them to settle here,…………….

A normal Friday in Whitby?

A normal Friday in Whitby?

…………..but by Friday lunchtime we had serious doubts. We found ourselves surrounded by more and more Goths ……. perhaps because we were drinking in The Elsinore, which bills itself as ‘The Home of Goths in Whitby’.

Marcus was perplexed and did a lot of gongoozeling (staring) …….. finally we picked up a flyer advertising the Goth Gigs over the coming weekend and all became clear!

We spent the rest of the afternoon in the old town where the early arrivals were promenading. Some of their costumes cost thousands of pounds and the variety of styles are amazing.

We decided to spend Saturday out and about with the camera and trying to find out more about the whole Goth scene that has totally passed us by ………I think Marcus quite fancies the idea of the boots ……

On Friday evening we strolled along to the yacht club and relaxed in more familiar surroundings. The club is well worth a visit. We had a very warm welcome and were invited back on Saturday for the Open Evening with a Buffet. After another day of Gothic edification, we were ready to step back into the ‘comfort zone’.

Saturday, camera in hand we took to the streets …….. far from finding the camera intrusive, the ‘Goths’ welcomed being photographed. We managed to get some inside info on the different types of costume from a couple of ‘Steam Punks’ …….. they devise costumes that take modern technology and create possible H G Wells-like steam / clockwork powered alternatives.
