Tuesday

Today we explored the delights of bus travel in Edinburgh. In order to get out to Tash’s, near Granton Harbour, we had to go through the centre of Edinburgh, which is in the throes of having it’s tram line installed, so streets are shut and traffic lights abound.
It was the first really warm day of the year and we arranged with Tash to go out for lunch. As we were passing down through Leith, Marcus got off the bus to look for a birthday present for me! Finding time and a suitable place for shopping is a bit of a problem …….. especially if you have a tendency to be ‘last minute.com’!
Tash, Freya and I decided to go along to the Loch Fyne restaurant to dine alfresco and met Marcus on the way. What a delight to be able to sit outside, overlooking Newhaven harbour

……….is this the start of summer??

After a quick ASDA, Tash and I met Marcus and Freya at the park

and then on to pick up a package?! from a shop in Leith ………. It was a VERY BIG package with ‘Electric Piano written on it!

In the evening Tash drove us (and the package) back to the boat and brought her friend, Gail, to visit. After dinner, a bottle of wine and a lot of ‘catching up’, we waved them goodbye…….on one of our Yogi herbal tea bags, the ‘Bon mot’ was:-

“A home is not a home without guests”

and we thought ……… How very true!

Wednesday

      My birthday!

I must have been excited about ‘the package‘ …….. couldn’t sleep, so got up, received my first Happy Birthday phone call from my Mum and caught up with some of the blog.

Blogging is a great way to record events, so long as their aren’t too many events going on!!

At last Marcus appeared and I could open my present ……… A Casio Electric Piano ……… full sized keyboard with weighted keys, foot pedal, stand and headphones! We spent the rest of the morning playing with it and on it ……….”Where will we put it?”, I hear you ask……….

Well we have a few options:-
a) either the forepeak or crew cabin, but a little too much of a struggle to set it up
b) stand it on end and strap it to the mast (below decks!) …… but first we would have to move the fire extinguisher and make a waterproof cover for it as the mast seal drips in certain conditions.
c) put it on the short berth in the aft cabin……(it’s the same height as me and I can fit on it)………put the lee cloth up and pack it with cushions.

So ……. we left it on the dinette table ………and set off to catch the bus to Leith for lunch and then a tour aboard The Royal Yacht Britannia.

It turns out that Britannia was commissioned the year after I was born and she looks her age too. The bridge and engine room look like something from a black and white war film, but everything is in sparkling order…….. To think they sailed her all around the world until 1997, with fewer gizmos and gadgets than we’ve got on board!
She has such style, with real ‘upstairs downstairs’ contrasts.

The dining table ...... definately 'upstairs'

The dining table …… definately ‘upstairs’

It’ a shame she had to be decommissioned, but as Tash said, it’s a sitting target for any terrorist, so I don’t think there will be a replacement any time soon.

To round off my day we went for dinner with the family and stayed the night on dry land.
A pretty well perfect birthday.

Back to the question “Where will we put it?”……..
Solution c) seems to be working and I can sit on the end of the bed and play……. Marcus went to bed early…… I should really have plugged the earphones in……

Option c) ....... So exciting to have a piano onboard!
